It sure does...emulsion for instance will re-emulsify when wet...no good, acrylic paint if using acrylic adhesive sometimes ok....it depends on how well the key is for the paint to the surface....IMO..remove all paints

Its Bathroom walls, a situation where the customer has gone and painted newly plastered walls. Tiles are 300x400. Ive tried stripping it but the emulsion has been watered down and soaked in nicely (or not so nicely in my case). Tape test removed virtually nothing, and after alot of time and effort I'm left with walls with paint still remaining. So due to tile size I need to use cement based adhesive and therefore need to prime, so would it hurt to cover the bits of paint that remain, whilst priming the rest of the walls. Other than that any other suggestions to remove the final bits wiyhout butchering the walls.

I didnt have a sander with me, as I didnt expect to find the walls painted. Could put the belt sander in the van for tomorrow. Time is now against me!

Sometimes this works !.Apply a skim coat of dirt cheap tubbed adh ,wait a few hours and the paint reacts with the adh and it should peel off with a scraper.
Bit messy but some times comes up as clean as a whistle

I always scratch the hell out of them with my chiesel edge making wide and deep score marks (and loads of them, much more than normal) run my scraper all over them to remove all loose and flaking bits, apply two coats of prime with APD, allow to dry then crack on........ No probs to date mate. If i started at 8am, i'd be tiling by 10 to give you an idea.

Cheers TJ, I hate painted walls with a passion. It's something I always wondered if people found pain-staking and time consuming like myself, or whether they knew of an easier way of removal and were laughing at us not in the know.

My usual approach.....
Days labour with sander prior to fixing !
Mostly get it !
If not walk away !

Spot on! This is what I do. Get some cheap/old tubbed gear and do as antwri says. 99 times out of 100 it'll scrape off dead cleanly.
Not sure about 3hrs though. I find if you let it dry out, it's harder than ever to remove.

The fact that it's harder than ever to move would surley mean that there is no need to do it in the first place, why not just use the dirt cheap addy and stick the tiles on it as you go. If it's that much of a struggle to remove once it's dried out tells me that it would be fine to tile over lol tongue.gif

I know this is an old topic ,but is there any adh you can use on vinyl silk emulsion.
Went to look at a job tonight,24m2 bathroom walls, paints been on 15yrs,well stuck on
Can't bear the thought of sanding it,would etching it with a stanley really be enough?.Or applying tanking liquid?
So what sticky????????????????

Did you turn up blind to job ?
If not and walls were not painted prior, then it is a good thing to remember to mention this at quote stage !

On that particular job the customer wasn't going to have the bathroom completely tiled. So I quoted for part tiling, then got a phone call to say they had decided to fully tile, so could I amend my quote. It wasnt until I arrived to do the job I found the walls part painted, obviously the decision to fully tile had been taken after the paint brushes had got a workout!

A word of caution about tiling on paint!
Went to a job blind today,a bathroom for a plumber that i get regular work from
7m2 on the walls,4m2 of which were cement boards and 2m2 which was on plaster and the rest on paint which looked fairly secure.
'never mind i'll just etch it with a knife'.Glad i did ,it was just like peeling a banana!
One thick coat of paint onto what must of been at the time fresh plaster(10 yrs ago)and had'nt been sealed or watered down.
Wish paint was always this easy to remove!
